Six Fraser Valley locations and 145 users, modernized for Applied Epic, Microsoft 365, and a security stack that was not in place when the work started.

The client

A leading insurance broker firm in B.C., Canada.

Like many firms that grow by acquisition, the brokerage had a mix of IT that was never designed to work as one secure estate. In March 2020 it needed to modernize: move from a legacy brokerage platform to Applied Epic in the cloud, fix an email system that could not support that move, and replace a thin security posture.

Challenge

What was in the way.

  • The internal IT technician left before the previous solution was fully deployed.
  • Applied Epic could not be implemented in the environment as it stood.
  • Email ran on a privately hosted third-party server, incompatible with Epic and inadequate for the business.
  • There was no EDR, managed firewall, multifactor authentication, patch management, or VPN. Internal security practice had to mature.

What we did

The work, in the same order we tell both studies.

Assessment

A full end-to-end review across all six locations. Root causes were identified and a road map set before the build.

Brokerage platform

Migration to the Applied Epic cloud system so the line-of-business platform could actually run.

Cybersecurity

SentinelOne endpoint detection and response with 24/7 SOC support, DNS Filter, patch management (Microsoft, third-party, and line-of-business), Fortinet firewalls configured and managed, and multifactor authentication.

Microsoft 365

User email migrated from the privately hosted server to Microsoft 365.

File services

Distributed File System (DFS) so files could be managed across locations.

Support agreement

A comprehensive agreement covering user support as well as the infrastructure and security work, with regular communication and a security-centric operating rhythm.

What changed

Facts from the study. Nothing added.

  • Applied Epic, Microsoft 365, and a layered security stack run as one managed estate across six locations.
  • The brokerage has remained a client for more than three years (as of the study) and can keep leadership on insurance.
  • Further work such as pen-testing, simulated phishing, or SIEM is discussed as opportunity.
